The Rockville Youth Bike Project, a subsidiary of Bikes for the World, needs your support—strategic guidance, volunteer time with teens, bikes, and money—to enhance its impact in the greater Montgomery County MD region. Here's a video from Rockville Channel 11 about the Rockville Youth Bike Project: Rockville Youth Bike Project Overview - Launched and growing since March 2007.
- Based at the historic King Farm Homestead in two buildings—a 3,000-ft hay barn used for storage and a small cottage housing the workshop and office—we are currently in a five-year lease with the City of Rockville (MD).
- Funded by Recreational Equipment Inc. (REI), Potomac Pedalers Touring Club (PPTC), the City of Rockville Parks and Recreation Program, and Bikes for the World, and your always welcome generous donations.
- RYBP is a dynamic and evolving project which has four main elements:
1. Pedestrian & bicycle safety training, a traveling program that goes onsite to the Elementary schools, in the City of Rockville Maryland. Grades K-2 receive instruction on basic pedestrian safety principles, while grades 3-5 get helmet fitting and a practical application of the “rules for the road” for cycling. 2. Community service – meet Maryland high school graduation requirements for SSL (Student Service Learning). Students learn about bike safety, maintenance, & repair through mentored hands on work including prepping bikes and/or stripping useful parts from unsuitable bikes, for delivery through Bikes for the World’s international and domestic programs. 3. EAB (Earn-A-Bike) is a still developing program which lets an individual learn basic bike repair skills, and use labor hours to obtain their own bike, helmet and lock. 4. Supply and support the City of Rockville “TERRIFIC” Citizen program which will award 50 bikes, helmets, and locks to Elementary Students who have earned them through demonstrated responsible acts.
