1. Accomplishments and Thanks for Loading Village Bicycle Project Shipment With the help of a Friday crew from the Howard Gardner School (Alexandria VA)—including adult leaders Alex and Bonnie, "inventory specialist" Colin, and J.T. ("Mr. Atlas"), and Saturday crew of stalwart BfW volunteers Craig Annear, Jay Everhart, Jimmy Hall, Debbie Prigal, Rich Robinson, Jerry Rogers, and Phil Ruth, we loaded another 436 bikes for the Village Bicycle Project ( www.pcei.org/vbp). The reason for the lower number was that at VBP request we put as many adult bikes as possible in the shipment, using children's bikes only where adult bikes would not fit. The breakdown was 47 children's bikes and 389 adult bikes. (In contrast, a recent shipment of 484 bikes held 305 adult bikes and 179 children's bikes.) With this shipment, Bikes for the World set a new mark of 7,909 bikes shipped, with expectations of reaching 8,400 with the Senegal shipment at the end of December. 2. End-of-Year Letter Our end-of-the-year fundraising appeal and program report is out, and will be posted on our website and snail-mailed or emailed to our supporters in coming days. Look for it and enjoy reading about upcoming projects and our accomplishments with your support. Thank you! 3. Rockville Youth Bike Project Seeks Mentors and other Volunteers The Rockville Youth Bike Project seeks adults with bike mechanic and program planning skills to volunteer their time to plan and build our youth program at the King Farm in northern Rockville. We intend to mentor teens in bike maintenance and repair, provide opportunities to earn a bike through learning and work, and provide community service opportunities to meet high school graduation requirements. Opportunities for adults to practice their bike skills will also be available. In the near term, we are also looking for some carpentry work to enhance our bicycle storage capacities in the barn.
